View of Mainline Railway crossing Britannia Bridge

The mainline railway crosses the Menai Strait via the Britannia Bridge. This photo looks down the railway from the Anglesey side of the Straits. On the right hand side of the image, you should just be able to see the platform on which sits a lion. There are four of these lions in total, two on either side of the Straits.

One of the four limestone lions

Here is a clearer picture of one of the four lions. The lions were designed by John Thomas, and are made from limestone. Originally the lions would have been visible to train passengers, but due to a fire in 1970 and the subsequent re-building of the bridge for road and rail traffic, they are no longer visible to people crossing the bridge, which is a great shame.
